| Scope | Sitting on the periphery of a horseshoe-shaped school table, the type where the teacher is seated in the middle and the children on the outside, my father and I meet with Mrs. Barbee, my fifth grade teacher, on parent-teacher-student conference day. Afterward I go out to play hopscotch or swing with the other children while they met to discuss my academic progress. Called back to the classroom to rejoin my father, Mrs. Barbee tells me that I should be very proud of him for attending a union meeting following ours. A shop steward of his union, he later became union secretary and president. Throughout his tenure with the glass-making company—whose exodus from our Southern Californian town along with those of other small and large manufacturing companies reshaped our thriving working-class oasis into the arid terrain of forgotteness that it is today—my father took written and verbal accounts of the injustices to his union brethren. As his secretary I earned $40 a month to type the sometimes functionally illiterate scrawl of the employee complaints on an Employee Grievance form. I scribed accounts of overt racism and sexism against black men at the time who were relegated to “hot end,” the area of the factory where blistering heat birthed the beautiful glass of ketchup and cola bottles. I chronicled instances of sexual harassment faced by women in a male-dominated work setting, and abuses of power by foremen who would not allow legally entitled breaks for restroom and refreshment. On that same word processor, I typed my college applications and personal statements. Along with many aspects of my poor-to-working-class community, I felt my education and training would somehow inoculate me against the “War on the Worker” Anne Feeney (1994) identified in the lyrics of her anthem for the labor movement. As I moved into the academy and became an educator, scholar and researcher, I felt that surely the reality of picket lines, rallies and protest declaring the legitimacy of my labor would not compete with the actual labor—my writing, reading and speaking—of my work, an academic woman's work. But on September 6, 2011, the day after Labor Day, I and the faculty union of my institution voted nearly unanimously to strike; for three days I woman-ed the picket line with my colleagues, students, and other supporters. |

| Scope | How can African Americans be described simultaneously by political scientists as one of the most liberal and the most authoritarian groups in the United States? This conundrum frames the puzzle at the core of this dissertation. I argue that the political behavior of many African Americans is caught in a tug of war between their racial identity and their predisposition to authoritarianism. When the issue at hand engages African Americans’ authoritarian predisposition, authoritarianism can trump racial identity, produce attitudes that defy conventional wisdom, and dash the common theoretical assumption that African American political behavior is homogeneous. Counter to some of the accepted theories of political science, I demonstrate that African American authoritarians are less likely to agree their individual fate is linked to their racial identity, African American political behavior is not always more liberal than Whites, and African American worldviews and political behaviors, when viewed through the lens of authoritarianism, are quite often heterogeneous and differentiated. Based on these findings, I contend that any theory of authoritarianism must include African Americans in its analysis or at least present very persuasive arguments for their exclusion. The fact is that 65 years after Adorno, Frenkel-Brunswick, Levinson, and Sanford’s Authoritarian Personality was published, the study of authoritarianism finds itself once again at a crossroads. Authoritarianism was originally conceived as a universal personality trait whose scope recognized no cultural, racial, geographic, or political boundaries. But the central theories of authoritarian activation and polarization today are predicated on data that exclude the most authoritarian racial group in America – African Americans – from analysis. It is time for political science to revise the contemporary research on authoritarianism to include African Americans. This is not an abstract exercise. It is a theoretical necessity. The result will not only improve the study of authoritarianism; it will also advance the broader inquiry that is political science as some of the discipline’s theoretical certainties become shibboleths, the collateral damage of an empirical inquiry into American Authoritarianism in Black and White. |
